IBM Passport Advantage: The Licensing Program Explained.

Passport Advantage is IBM's primary commercial program for acquiring software licenses and the subscription and support that keeps them current. When IBM runs an audit, the program record is the entitlement baseline on one side of the equation, and your measured deployment is the other. The gap between the two is the finding.

What the program records.

It holds the entitlements you have purchased, the metrics they are licensed under, and the state of your subscription and support. Those metrics matter because they decide how a deployment is counted. Most distributed middleware is measured in Processor Value Units, a core based metric. Other products use Resource Value Units, a usage based metric. Container and Cloud Pak products are measured in Virtual Processor Cores, and since Passport Advantage v11 those VPC metered products fall under the same sub-capacity reporting rules as everything else.

Why support status is pivotal.

Subscription and support is not just access to fixes. Letting it lapse on a deployed product is one of the recognized audit triggers, and expired support on running software is a common source of exposure. The program record is where that status lives, which is why it is one of the first things an auditor reconciles.

Using the record on your side.

• Reconstruct your entitlements from the program record before the auditor presents theirs
• Confirm the metric on each entitlement, since a misread metric changes the whole count
• Identify offsets and credits the auditor may have left out
• Treat the program record as your evidence, not merely IBM's
